When the Omicron variant was first discovered, it was reportedly undetected or at least less susceptible to being detected in tests. Many people at the time had believed that traditional COVID-19 tests were not able to detect or were not accurate against Omicron. Luckily for us, these reports have likely been overstated causing misinformation regarding Omicron to spread. The problem with testing Omicron most likely started because it had a genetic mutation making it unable to be differentiated from other variants at the time. This caused tests to have decreased and delayed sensitivity in detecting results for Omicron. 



Currently the Omicron variant makes up roughly 90% of all new COVID-19 cases in the US. As Omicron continues to be the dominant COVID-19 variant circulating the world, there is a growing concern over whether or not rapid antigen and PCR tests are accurate against Omicron. The World Health Organization (WHO) has affirmed in a statement that both rapid antigen and PCR tests can now detect the Omicron variant as well as other previous variants. Now that COVID-19 tests are accurate against Omicron, people no longer have to be afraid of catching the virus and not knowing about it.
